Directors Guild of America Announces Award Nominees for 2010

We've already seen the nominees for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Producers Guild Awards and the Writers Guild Awards. Now we have the nominees for the Directors Guild Awards honoring Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for the year 2010. With only five nominees (as opposed to the Producers Guild's ten nominees in sync with the ten Best Picture nominations at the Oscars), this could be a good indicator of which directors will be nominated for an Oscar later this month. But before we get ahead of ourselves, read below for the entire list of filmmakers nominated for this year's Directors Guild Awards.

The nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film 2010:

» Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan
» David Fincher for The Social Network
» Tom Hooper for The King's Speech
» Christopher Nolan for Inception
» David O. Russell for The Fighter

Once again there are new faces amongst the nominees for the DGA awards this year since Darren Aronofsky, Tom Hooper and David O. Russell have never been nominated before. In addition, this year is special because it serves as the 75th anniversary of the Directors Guild. President of the guild, filmmaker Taylor Hackford said, "2011 marks the 75th anniversary of the DGA, making the celebration of this year’s five nominees especially meaningful. Their inspired films radiate the passion and unique vision of each of these filmmakers, who are about to become part of our Guild's rich history. My sincerest congratulations to all five nominees.”

While I'm mostly pleased with the DGA's nominations, The Fighter didn't make my Top 10 of 2010, and I think that I would've preferred seeing The Coen Brothers get nominated for True Grit or Debra Granik for Winter's Bone. There's a chance that these won't actually be the five directors nominated at the Oscars, and I'm kinda hoping the Academy throws a curveball our way when the nominations are announced later this month. But despite my nitpicking, all five of the nominated directors delivered spectacular films, and they are all worthy of being honored by their peers. The winner will be announced at the 63rd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 29. What do you think of the nominees?
