Next after Sam Worthington it's Edgar Ramirez making his mainstream debut in the Clash of the Titans sequel? Deadline says that the 33-year-old Venezuelan actor, who was in Domino, The Bourne Ultimatum, Vantage Point, Che and Carlos, has been offered the role of Ares, the God of War, in the upcoming sequel Wrath of the Titans from Legendary and Warner Bros. Apparently Ramirez is "on the verge of making a deal" to star opposite Worthington, so it's his role to take. I'm wondering if they're playing Ares as a bad guy in this sequel or as a helpful new "good guy" God who will guide Perseus on his quest, as we don't know yet.
Battle Los Angeles and The Killing Room director Jonathan Liebesman is taking over for Louis Leterrier this time and directing a much more action-packed kinetic sequel, hopefully ridding us of the bad taste that I know last year's remake left many moviegoers' with. We don't know much about the plotline in this sequel, but it's definitely sounding good if they're bringing Ares into the mix and going with a title like Wrath of the Titans. Warner Bros already set a March 30th, 2012 release date and production begins in a few months in England. Neeson is also back, but other roles have yet to be filled, so I expect we'll be hearing a lot more about this soon. Ramirez is an awesome actor to beef up the cast, looking forward to seeing who else joins.
UPDATE: Not soon after the news first hit, The Wrap decided to bust open a huge amount of juicy casting news for Wrath of the Titans, all of which is not confirmed, but mostly only in the early stages. In addition to Ramirez, they say Toby Kebbell (one of our favorites) from RocknRolla and Prince of Persia is almost set to play Agenor, son of Poseidon and Libya, which would be awesome to see. But that's not all! Actresses on a shortlist for the role of Princess Andromeda are: Hayley Atwell (The Duchess, Captain America), Georgina Haig (Wasted on the Young), Janet Montgomery (Black Swan), Dominique McElligott (Dark Floors) and Clémence Poesy (In Bruges, Harry Potter, 127 Hours). I'm for Poesy – I love her!
Other confirmed returning cast members include Gemma Arterton (Io), Ralph Fiennes (Hades) and Liam Neeson (Zeus). Another name they toss into the hat – Bill Nighy, yes, that Bill Nighy (Shaun of the Dead, Valkyrie, The Boat That Rocked, Rufus Scrimgeour) as Hephaestus, the god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. But unfortunately "his participation is far from official at this point." It sounds like Liebesman is doing some impressive casting over there in London, I'm impressed, this is starting to look good based on the cast alone. We'll keep you guys updated!
