Considering he didn't really offer much in the vein of spectacular style or incomparable vision for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, I'm not really upset with the news from 24 Frames that Stephen Sommers won't return to direct the sequel. This completely contradicts the news we heard last August when it was reported Sommers would return for the sequel, but apparently a couple agents to unnamed directors have been contacted recently about helming the sequel instead. This isn't surprising considering the rumors of trouble with Sommers on the set of the toy adaptation along with the fact that the filmmaker is also lined up for an Odd Thomas movie.
However, no project with Sommers is involved is ready to shoot immediately, so it sounds like the director and Paramount Pictures may simply have had a falling out. It shouldn't be too hard to find a director that can craft action sequences with the same craziness in which a child might play with their own G.I. Joe action figures. Hopefully this time some better writing will come in the form of a script by Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick who came on board the project over a year ago. But we still don't know who will direct the sequel with Sommers gone, and knowing is half the battle. Who do you want to direct G.I. Joe 2?
